On a warm still evening at The Nevill the U14s beat a plucky St Andrews side by 52 runs to book their place in The Cup quarter finals where it looks like they will play St James, last year's winning finalists. St Andrews won the toss and put us in, something they may well have regretted, as the sun set later in the evening. We were off to a steady start, but scoring was frustratingly slow by our standards. The long grass in the outfield meant boundaries were hard to come by and gaps were hard to find. St Andrews took pace off the ball and our top order found it hard to pierce the field. However, we managed to up the scoring rate in the second half of the innings thanks to 20s from Mat Cordery, Samir Bahemou and Moses Brazil, and ended with a score of 112 for 3 from our 20 overs. By last seasons standards probably 30 below par.
We needed a disciplined bowling and fielding performance and produced exactly that, restricting them to just 60 for 4 in their 20 overs. Captain, Connor May, marshalled the team well and lead from the front with a stunning left handed catch to dismiss St Andrews most dangerous hitter. Next Tuesday our defence of the A League title begins away at Burgess Hill.
